26.2 Miles of Smiles

This past Saturday I arose at 04h00 to meet up with my friends Jim, Debbie and Laura. We drove down to Richmond to watch our friends Dana, Rick and Betsy run in the Richmond Marathon. All in all a good time was had by all.

The day started out very, very cold. And when you’re up and about that early you’re never totally about your wits. We met up with our runners just moments before their race began. We then went to a diner to have some breakfast.

I probably should have eaten a lighter breakfast, because my plan was to hop in and run with Dana and Betsy for part of the marathon. Whether or not marathon officials like that people do this (they probably don’t) it happens all the time. So, at about mile 17 I hopped in and ran the rest of the race to provide some moral support for Dana and Betsy. It was a lot of fun.

I was surprised by how nice some of the neighborhoods in Richmond were. I don’t mean nice like opulent, but nice as in kind of neat, funky I-would-like-to-live-here kind of places. I hadn’t been to Richmond in eight years or so, and it appears I missed some of the nicer parts the last time I was there. Rumor has it the cost of living is much cheaper than the northern part of Virginia, too.
